East Barnby Residential Day 1

Welcome to Rowan Class

We are Topcliffe’s year 5 class, taught by Miss Howard. We are very busy learning in a range of different ways across all of the curriculum areas.

In Maths we learn a broad range of methods and approaches in order to tackle calculations and problems. This is supported by our daily maths sessions, called CLIC, which give us practise every day of the key maths concepts. We practise our times tables each day and enjoy a weekly competition of BIG MATHS BEAT THAT where we can be challenged to beat our previous score and improve our speed in arithmetic questions.

In English we are following a theme-based approach where we can really lose ourselves in a range of different writing styles and genres. We are enjoying daily guided-reading sessions with books such as Sorrowline, Stormbreaker and Skellig. We also have opportunities for independent reading each day during our super, quiet, uninterrupted, independent, reading time; or ‘SQUIRT’ as we like to call it!

We enjoy lots of sporting activities in Rowan class and particularly enjoy competitions with other local schools in Football, Gymnastics, Tag Rugby and Cross Country. We can even sign ourselves up for a lunchtime running club each week!

We are very lucky to be given the opportunity to experience an exciting residential trip each year either to France or to East Barnby (alternate years), along with Maple class. This is a very exciting time for us!
